Young musicians put on summer concert

St Michael's Youth Orchestra

 

THE MUSICIANS from the WELB (Western Education and Library Board) Youth Orchestra recently returned from a five day residential in Limerick.

And to mark the end of their residential the young musicians performed a concert in St Michael’s College last month evening.

Monday night’s concert was conducted by tutor John Bergin with Laura Kennedy the leader of the orchestra.

The programme included Waltz from “Masquerade”, Aram Khachaturian; L’Arlésienne Suites 1 & 2,  Georges Bizet, folk/traditional group, Lord of the Rings – Howard Shore, themes from 007 arranged by Calvin Custer

The WELB Music Service would like to thank the Principal, Mr McCullagh and staff of St Michael’s College for hosting the’s concert.

Limerick is Ireland’s City of Culture 2014 and the WELB Youth Orchestra were invited to join in the celebrations with a concert performance in the historic St Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick on Sunday 29 June 2014.

The University of Limerick hosted the Youth Orchestra residential course at the Irish Chamber Orchestra Campus from 25 June to 30 June.

The Irish Chamber Orchestra facility houses a double-height 300-square-metre rehearsal/performance studio which has been acoustically modelled to share the properties of the world’s finest concert halls and will provide outstanding rehearsal facilities.

During their time in Limerck there were opportunities for students to participate in and attend workshops, masterclasses and performances delivered by renowned performers, exponents and teachers of folk music, song and dance.

The university arena is Ireland’s largest indoor sporting complex and includes an Olympic size swimming pool.
