Film Focus: Batman and Superman to face off against each other

Who will win? You’ll have to wait until 2015 to find out

IT’S AN ARGUMENT kids have been having for generations – somewhere up there with ‘my da could beat up your da’.  Who is the greatest superhero?

Now, thanks to Warner Bros, we might all find out as two of the greatest superheros of all time – Batman – the dark knight himself, and Superman – the man of steel – are to appear in a movie together for the first time.

In an exclusive announcement which took place at Comic Con in the States and was made by Zack Snyder to thousands of comic book fans he confirmed that he is making a follow-up to ‘Man of Steel’ which will feature Superman and Batman.

In a way it’s hard to comprehend how two such different superheroes – who are both essentially good and who aim to save people, and fight crime (respectively) could comfortably co-exist side by side in the same movie.

It’s also a strange one from a financial point of view. If Warners Bros know a movie featuring one of these two superheroes is going to gross them ‘x’ amount of millions then why make one (featuring both) when they can make two – and surely make double the amount of cash.

It’s not that there is anything new about having more than one superhero in a movie but, to the best of my limited knowledge, these two haven’t appeared together before.

And if you think about it – these two are pretty different characters.

Superman is an extra terrestrial – not a human – who came to earth from planet Krypton and on earth he possesses superhuman powers of strength, and, of course, the handy ability to fly.

Batman, on the other hand, is just a normal human being – born of human parents. His gig is that he’s a rich philanthropist who inherited his parent’s vast fortune when they were killed by a common criminal.

His mission in life is to avenge their death by ridding his home city of Gotham (just up the road from Metropolis) of criminals.

But as Batman is human he doesn’t have any superhuman powers so he invests some of the millions in developing a whole manner of toys including armour plated bat suits, a bat mobile and all series of other devices and pulley systems to aid his crime fighting. And keeps all his gear in a secret armoured bunker he calls the bat cave.

We have been told Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Superman but we also know Christian Bale will NOT be returning for a fourth time as Batman -brilliant as he was.

Which leaves a very big question – who will don the black mask? Answers on a postcard please.

Anyway, back to the important question about who is better.

We first have to wonder what these two guys are going to fall out about. Who has the nicest suit. Or maybe the time honoured reason men fall out – a beautiful woman.

If you look at this logically Batman is a sharp guy who has all the toys, and lots of money but he doesn’t have super powers; he can’t REALLY fly and he certainly hasn’t endless strength.

Unless Batman has a piece of Kryptonite in the boot of his Batmobile my money would be on Superman (Man of Steel) to win a fight. But, according to Warner Bros and Mr Snyder we will have to wait until at least summer 2015 to find out.
