Donal calls time on life behind the bar

ONE of Fermanagh’s best known bars for Country Music is changing hands at the end of this month.
Carron’s Corner Bar on Ederney’s Main Street which has been owned and managed by Donal Carron since November 2006 has its final night on Sunday 27th. The new leaseholders Sean and Jude O’Donnell, from Killeter, take over the following day.
Mr Carron says that the pub trade has changed since he took over the Corner Bar 13 years ago.
“People no longer frequent the pub midweek and it’s all about getting them out to something at the weekend,” he said. “That’s one of the reason’s the Country music has gone down so well here. The trend for pubs generally is that one is closing every four days in the North. But here trade over the festive season was our best in 13 years.”
Mr Carron says, “I’ll have a lot of great memories over the years here and building up relationships with the locals. The one thing I’ll miss is the company.
“I’ll hopefully take up a more relaxed life and it will be somewhere I can go as a punter rather than a manager to enjoy the chat and the music,” he said.
In recent times Carron’s made its name for top class Country music with artists such as Roly Daniels, Ray Lynam, Brian Coll and Philomena Begley appearing, but the pub on the corner is also a community hub hosting meetings, annual events, birthday parties community nights.
A year after acquiring the bar, Donal bought the premises next door to extend the lounge and in 2015 further extended the lounge to accommodate the successful Country nights.
Now, from Monday 28th January, the Ederney bar will be managed by father and son pair Sean and Jude
O’Donnell.
Sean has over 20 years experience in the licensed trade, having owned a pub for 12 years.
“He’s bringing quite a bit of experience to Ederney and hopes to continue along the same lines and build on it,” said Donal, whose final night is this Sunday when ‘White Lightening’ play from 9.15 pm until 11.30pm.
