There was mixed fortunes for the two Enniskillen sides in the second round of the Youth Cup on Saturday as Enniskillen Town recorded an impressive 2-1  away win to Carrick Rangers while Enniskillen Rangers slipped to a 0-3 home defeat to Belfast outfit St. Oliver Plunketts.

Ryan Beacom’s Enniskillen Town travelled to Carrick with a young side, a number of players with three more years at this level took to the field and produced excellent displays.

After 10 minutes the Town boys settled having realised they could get a result.

Beacom stated “I knew I was bringing a strong side with me albeit a relatively young one, the boys done exactly what was asked off them and they realised early on they were well fit to compete with a more physical Carrick side and deservedly advanced into the next round”
The home side made the early running and would hit the crossbar but Town soon settled into their rhythm and dictated the play.

With 21 minutes on the clock Adam Breen, who was outstanding throughout and a player who has gained first team experience in the last number of seasons, got the opening goal.

A long throw from Owen Beacom saw Breen rise highest to head home.

Ten more minutes had elapsed when Town added their second goal, talented youngster Lorcan McStravick with a composed finish from a corner kick. Town were fit to keep Carrick at bay until the 65th minute when the hosts pulled a goal back but over the closing 25 minutes the Town defence stood firm, in particular Gary Doherty in goals was a commanding presence throughout.

There was no win for Enniskillen Rangers who, despite a positive performance, couldn’t contain a lively Oliver Plunketts side on the day and exited the competition on a 3-0 scoreline.
