HEALTH staff in Fermanagh are being stretched to the limit according to Fermanagh Unison branch secretary, Jill Weir.
Commenting on the results of a Fermanagh Herald poll which indicated that a majority of people in the county are not satisfied with the level of healthcare they receive here, Jill said that cuts by the government are affecting staff that ‘strive to give more than 100%’.
She also described the National Health Service (NHS) staff as becoming ‘burnt out’.
“I do recognise that with the damaging cuts to the NHS that have been delivered by this current government, this will affect the overall outcome of satisfaction for the people who use this service,” Jill said, reacting to the Fermanagh Herald poll that showed a majority are dissatisfied with the level of healthcare they receive.
“Staffing levels in the hospital are cut back to the bone and although staff within the NHS will strive to give more than 100%, it is becoming harder to deliver the service that the public has come to, and quite rightly so, expect.”
Jill also said that unless the government puts more resources into healthcare, ‘things will only get worse’.
“Nurses are constantly saying they are stressed at work and it is disheartening for them to not be able to spend the amount of time with each of their patients that they would like to. Other disciplines of staff are being told to make cuts and more is expected of each employee who is already working to their full capacity.
“The NHS staff is becoming ‘burnt’ out and I have more staff coming to me with these feelings. The pressure is more apparent now that we are being told to expect more cuts and that even more savings are to be made by our trust.”
