THREE fledgling members of the Erne Wrestling Club, which runs classes in the Lakeland Forum, brought home two silvers and a bronze medal from the recent, ‘City of Culture’ novice wrestling championships.

The trio were Conal Sweeney, Mark McGuigan and Ciaran Boyle, with Conal and Ciaran winning the silvers and Mark the bronze.

But, no one was happier than their coach, Bruce Irwin.

He told the Herald: “The club is steadily growing, with aspirations of getting many more involved in such a universal sport. We are developing both wrestlers and coaches in our efforts to demonstrate the opportunities for all in wrestling.”

And, the good news doesn’t end there.

Bruce has been selected as the Commonwealth Selection Committee Chairman (on the coaching end), and Mark McGuigan has been named one of the coaches for the North West Talent Development Squad.

It will develop young talent to prepare them for local, national and international competitions.

The club continues to train at the Lakeland Forum in Enniskillen on Wednesday(8-9pm) and Friday(7-8pm).

“We would like to invite all boys and girls interested in wrestling and general good fitness, from 7 years up through adults, to join in on some really fun sessions”, Bruce added.
The fee is £3 for under-17 and £4 for 17-plus.

The club would appreciate sponsorship to help it spread the benefits of wrestling, and, despite its youth, it has been given the opportunity to host next year’s British Junior National Championship.
