FREE Wi-Fi is coming to town, thanks to a new programme being rolled out by Fermanagh District Council.

This week the Council has launched public wireless internet connections at two of the county’s key attractions which will allow visitors to go online on their tablet or smartphone.

Wireless internet, or public Wi-Fi, is now available at attractions such as The Ardhowen Theatre, Enniskillen and the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark visitor centre, Florencecourt.

And a continuation of this programme will include free wi-fi for the public in and around Enniskillen town centre, with this expected to be operational before the end of the year.

The public Wi-Fi access has been made possible thanks to financial support from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, through the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, as part of the G8 Local Delivery Group’s Communication, Animation and Legacy Plan.

Fermanagh District Council was the lead partner of the G8 Local Delivery Group.

Launching the free public wireless internet access at The Ardhowen Theatre and the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark visitor centre, Chairman of Fermanagh District Council, Councillor Alex Baird, said:

“Fermanagh District Council is grateful to the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board for its support to make free wireless internet available to visitors and patrons of The Ardhowen Theatre and Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark visitor centre.

“The Council is committed to developing County Fermanagh’s visitor services and the introduction of free public Wi-Fi at The Ardhowen Theatre and the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark visitor centre is a significant development in our service offering.”

To access the public internet Wi-Fi service, people will be prompted to complete an online registration form, which requires users to accept the Fermanagh District Council public internet Wi-Fi Terms and Conditions.

The installation of free public Wi-Fi at The Ardhowen Theatre and the visitor centre at the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark marks the beginning of a programme of improvements to public wireless internet access for residents of and visitors to County Fermanagh with plans to provide free public Wi-Fi in Enniskillen town by the end of the year with funding from the Department of Social Development.

Sinn Féin MLA Phil Flanagan has welcomed the news that free wifi is to be made available in the town centre of Enniskillen by December 2013.

Mr Flanagan said: “The introduction of free wifi in the town centre of Enniskillen is a very positive step and will surely increase the attractiveness of the town as a destination for visitors.

“It is important that those wanting to use the internet are given the opportunity to do so.”
