LOOKING TO THE FUTURE…Portora Royal

THE PROPOSED merger between Portora Royal and Collegiate Grammar school has moved one step closer.

At a meeting held yesterday, May 16, board members gave approval to move to a Consultation Process, and to take forward the Development Proposal Process, with regard to the amalgamation of Enniskillen Collegiate Grammar School and Portora Royal School.

The Consultation Process is scheduled to commence in June 2013, or as soon as possible thereafter, with the proposed amalgamation planned for September 2014.

It is envisaged that the newly amalgamated co-educational school will be a Voluntary Grammar School and will be located on Portora Hill, Enniskillen.

The proposed amalgamation will allow for the planning of a new build school to be taken forward, which will be sustainable economically, educationally and environmentally, thereby facilitating high quality learning and teaching in a dynamic and exciting educational environment.

This proposal facilitates taking forward the WELB’s vision for two new stand-alone long-term sustainable schools in Enniskillen, to meet the future needs of pupils in the Controlled/Voluntary Post Primary Sector in Co Fermanagh, so that every young person achieves his/her potential at each stage of his/her development.

This includes: the provision of a new co-educational school to facilitate the amalgamation of Enniskillen Collegiate Grammar School and Portora Royal School; and the provision of a new co-educational school to replace Devenish College and to facilitate the amalgamation or closure of Lisnaskea High School.

Each school will have its own ethos, culture and management structure and have an equal pupil enrolment number, with the 50/50 enrolment process commencing in September 2015.

The taking forward of the Development Proposal Process will ensure that all interested parties are informed about the proposed changes and that they will have opportunity to comment on the proposal before a final decision is taken.  The outcome of any Development Proposal is subject to Ministerial Approval.
