THE father of Ian Rutledge, who shot and killed his family in Maguiresbridge, has received a suspended sentence for failing to comply with the conditions of a firearm certificate.
Ernest Rutledge (77), of Dernavogy Road in Brookeborough, who had previously admitted to the charge, appeared before Enniskillen Magistrates’ Court today (Wednesday) for sentencing.

On July 23 2025, emergency services raced to the scene and discovered the victims in different parts of the house at Crummeer Road, Maguiresbridge.
Vanessa Whyte (45) and daughter Sara Rutledge were pronounced dead at the scene while son James Rutledge (13) was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries.
Ian Rutledge, who carried out the horrific attack had shot himself. He was rushed to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, dying several days later.
Suspended sentence
After a lengthy sentencing hearing at Enniskillen Magistrates’ Court this morning, District Judge Alana McSorley sentenced Rutledge to six months in prison, suspended for two years.
She also imposed an eight year ban on holding a firearm certificate.
Two sisters of Ms Whyte were in attendance at the hearing where a Victim Impact Statement was submitted to the court.
