THERE were a dozen dog attacks on people in the Fermanagh and Omagh area in the first three months of this year.
In its quarterly report, due to be delivered to the May meeting of the Council’s environmental services committee, it was revealed that between January 1 and March 31 this year, there were 12 reported dog attacks on a person.
None of these resulted in any formal action, however, by the Council’s dog control department.
The figure is a slight increase on the same period during the previous year, when there were 11 dogs attacks on person from December 14 2023 to March 19 2024, resulting in two formal actions by the Council.
Back to this years figures, there were also seven dog on dog attacks, resulting in one control condition being issues. This is the same number as the same period the previous year.
There nine dog attacks on livestock, resulting in four control conditions. These figures are slightly down on the previous year, when there were 11 livestock attacks over the same three month period.
The number of stray dogs complaints in the area was down on last year, falling from 106 at the start of 2024 to 78 in the first three months of these year, when the Council issued four control conditions and three fixed penalty notices.
Finally, in news that will be of no surprise to anyone who regularly walks local streets, despite the fall in stray dogs there has been an increase in the number of dog fouling incidents reported.
In the first three months of 2024 there were 30 dog fouling complaints, while in the first three months of 2025 there 32 incidents. Of course, these are only the reported incidents, with countless more going on recorded.
