Fermanagh Reds fans bask in league glory

LIFELONG Liverpool fan Shane Mulligan said Sunday was “one of the best days of my life” after the Reds won the Premier League title following their comprehensive 5-1 victory over Tottenham.
Arne Slot’s side captured their 20th league title with four games to spare and a large contingent of local Reds’ fans travelled over to Anfield at the weekend for their game against Spurs.
“It’s unbelievable. Dreams really do come true,” Shane Mulligan told the ‘Herald.
“I go to every home and away game and when Trent [Alexander-Arnold] scored that goal against Leicester, it was the first time that our supporters really truly believed that it was going to happen.”
Sunday was a double celebration for Shane, who celebrated his 37th birthday at Anfield along with his wife Faye, children Caiden, Lucas and Sophia and his father Jack.
Although Liverpool won the Premier League in 2019-20, this victory sits different for the local fan.
“As a football fan, Sunday is probably one of the best days of my life. I couldn’t stop crying, my kids couldn’t stop crying,” Shane recalled.
“All the flights, coaches, drives to Belfast and Dublin, trips to Europe and away days, the miles I have put in all season is worth it now. It all comes down to Sunday.
“Seeing all my Scouse mates in tears and feeling the same, it’s incredible. We’re away to Chelsea on Sunday and it’s our first guard of honour. I can’t wait to enjoy every game now.”
The Fermanagh man is full of praise for the impact made by Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
“At the start of the season, I don’t think any Liverpool fan thought we’d win the league. What Slot has done is amazing. He’s cool and collected and his relationship with his players is brilliant.
“It’s like [Bill] Shankley and [Bob] Paisley again, with Shankley building the foundation and Paisley winning everything. [Jurgen] Klopp really built the foundations and Slot has now won again.”
Looking ahead to next season, Shane’s hopeful that Liverpool can “really build” on their success.
“If Slot gets his backing from FSG [Fenway Sports Group], we can really build on this season and we could be favourites for the Premier League again next season,” he added.
