Enniskillen rugby stalwarts honoured by IRFU

A LOCAL rugby club has congratulated two of their members after their “longstanding and distinguished service” was recognised at a major Irish Rugby celebration at the Aviva Stadium.

Aly and Terry Finlay have been central figures in the development of rugby in Enniskillen and in Fermanagh and they were honoured at a celebration for 150 years of the formation of the IRFU.

The duo were awarded a special medal at a prizegiving ceremony at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, with the Enniskillen Royal Grammar School congratulating them on their recognition.

“We were delighted that Aly and Terry Finlay’s longstanding and distinguished service to the promotion of both girls’ and boy’s rugby in Enniskillen Royal Grammar School and in our legacy schools, of the Collegiate Grammar and Portora Royal, was recently recognised in their award of a presentation of a specially commissioned medal by the IRFU,” a school statement read.

The IRFU said that the awards ceremony, which marked 150 years of the Irish Rugby association, was a chance for local sports groups to recognise key figures who have left a lasting legacy.

“The nomination process was a chance for Clubs, Schools and Provinces to acknowledge the significant impact of members throughout the generations up to the modern day,” they said.

“These influences can still be witnessed in the rugby community across the island of Ireland.”
