THE new multi-million pound Cancer Focus centre will officially open in Enniskillen this month in what will be a major boost to people living with cancer in Fermanagh and their families.
Major work has been ongoing at 18 High Street in Enniskillen on the development of the new therapeutic centre, with anticipation building up for the officially opening of the premise.
The ‘Herald understands that the new centre will officially open on Wednesday, May 28.
A range of major fundraising events are taking place across the county to support the new therapeutic centre, which will be the first of its kind to open in the North.
During a visit to Enniskillen, Northern Ireland Health Minister, Mike Nesbitt, welcomed the development of the multi-million pound facility, which he said will be a big boost to the local and surrounding community.
“The development of this centre is a vital step forward in improving cancer care and support services, and I am delighted to see the progress being made,” Mr Nesbitt explained.
“Strong collaboration between government and charities such as Cancer Focus NI is essential to delivering better outcomes and enhancing cancer care across Northern Ireland.”
The local branch of the Cancer Focus group has been carrying out a range of fundraisers to aid with the development of the facility, with the community rallying in support.
An Enniskillen Cancer Focus Shop was established in the town to help raise much-needed funds. Shop manager, Christina Hoy, is delighted with the support that they’ve received to date.
“Cancer has touched most families in the community, and at Cancer Focus NI we aim to deliver care and support to those affected by cancer in every corner of the North,” she said.
“[We aim to] create spaces of sanctuary and support for people with cancer and their families.
“It’s about bringing cancer care into the community, into spaces which are familiar to people and try to normalise cancer care in everyday life,” added Ms Hoy.
A fundraising walk up Cuilcagh Mountain is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 20.
