THE Speech and Language Therapy Team at the South West Acute Hospital have been praised for going “above and beyond” in their duty after they were named as winners of a major award.
The Adult Acute Specialist Speech and Language Therapy Team at SWAH, along with their colleagues at Altnagelvin, claimed the ‘We Are West Mission Cup’ in recognition of their work.
Operating at the SWAH, the Adult Acute SLT team provide a range of support to people who are in hospital with communication issues, as well as eating, drinking or swallowing difficulties.
People who live with a number of neurological conditions, which includes dementia, brain injuries, strokes and Parkinson’s disease, also receive help and support from the Adult Acute SLT team.
Chief Executive of the Western Trust, Neil Guckian, praised the work of the local team.
“We have outstanding staff who work incredibly hard to deliver great care every day,” he said.
“The Mission Cup is an important way of recognising those who have achieved something particularly special or who have gone above and beyond in their work.
“Presenting the Cup is always a real highlight for me. It is clear to see the Adult Acute SLT Team is highly valued and respected by their colleagues in Learning Disability,” added Mr Guckian.
Head of Speech and Language Therapy, Una Isdell, also welcomed the award win.
“The Adult Acute SLT team work across Altnagelvin, SWAH, OHPCC and Waterside Hospital from stroke and cancer wards to ED and ICU,” Ms Isdell explained.
“This team consistently go the extra mile to ensure patients and families receive the best care.
“Their dedication, care and compassion shine through in every aspect if their work and their focus on patient safety, choice and quality of life is unwavering,” she added.
