A LOCAL RNLI crew is urging the public to prioritise safety on Lough Erne following a series of incidents in the last week.
As warmer weather draws more visitors to the picturesque waters, the RNLI emphasises the importance of being prepared and vigilant to prevent accidents.
With multiple rescues already reported this season, the organisation is calling on everyone to familiarise themselves with safety guidelines, ensure equipment is in good condition and always keep a watchful eye on changing weather conditions
“Always wear a lifejacket or buoyancy aid and know how to float in an emergency – if you find yourself struggling in the water unexpectedly, your instinct will tell you to swim hard, instead, you should Float to Live,” a spokesperson from Carrybridge RNLI said.
“The best way to float is to tilt your head back with your ears submerged. Try to relax and breathe normally. You can gently move your hands to help you stay afloat if you need to. Spread your arms and legs out to improve stability – and it’s ok if your legs sink, we all float differently.”
Communication is important when out on the water.
“Always carry a means of calling for help, for example a mobile phone in a waterproof pouch, and keep it on you. Always check the weather forecast. If you see someone in trouble, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard,” they said.
A message was also sent to people who are planning on jetty jumping this summer.
“Be mindful that the air temperature this time of year in the sun may be warm, however the lake temperature will be a lot colder. The lake levels are also lower making water being shallower around jetties and shorelines,” they added.
