It was a surreal time to make your championship debut. Behind closed doors, with zero fans in attendance, Luke Flanagan took to the field against Down in November 2020 — amid a Covid-hit season.
Now, the Derrylin corner back is set to face the same opposition this Saturday, as part of a squad determined to deliver Fermanagh’s first championship win since 2018.
“Since I’ve been senior, I’ve never won a game in championship with Fermanagh,” said Flanagan. “We’ve had some tough draws over the years — like Derry, and Tyrone coming off winning the All-Ireland — so we haven’t had the best of luck, and they’re never easy. But this is one we think we can win, especially at Brewster Park.”
Flanagan made his championship debut during the disjointed 2020 campaign, lining out against Down as Fermanagh’s Ulster run ended in a 1-15 to 0-11 defeat. He was one of four debutants that day, alongside Hogan Cup-winning teammates Seán McNally and Josh Largo Elis, and forward Darragh McGurn.
