ENNISKILLEN town centre is set to assess how it can become more sustainable and eco-friendly in a bid to make the area more attractive to tourists and encourage more footfall in the high street.
Enniskillen Business Improvement District is set to unveil a range of unique measures, with the collective aim of supporting businesses, which have been struggling massively in recent weeks.
“We’re just finalising the Action Plan,” Noelle McAloon, pictured below, from Enniskillen BID explained.
“We’re getting ready to install our water stations in Eden Street and the Buttermarket over the next few weeks so people will be able to refill their bottles. We are doing a bit of a bit of a sustainability push in a bid to reduce the amount of plastic bottles in Enniskillen.”
It is also the intention to try and reduce the amount of plastic being discarded in the town.
“We are going to be introducing reusable coffee cups into all of the coffee shops over the coming months. That’s slightly different to what we’ve been doing,” said Ms McAloon.
“We see it so important that visitors want to be more sustainable and we’re trying to help.”
Major concerns have been raised over the future of the high street, with some businesses reporting that they’re enduring a difficult time with a lack of footfall in Enniskillen town centre.
The manager at Enniskillen BID recognises the major struggles that local businesses are facing.
“Businesses are probably just coping,” said Ms McAloon.
“While it’s my job to say Enniskillen has a lot going for it, it’s also my job to say that running a business in the climate is extremely difficult. The economic crisis is very, very tough.
“With the National Insurance rise, that’s money coming out of employers. Anyone that is opening their doors is doing well and we need to support them and recognise it’s a struggle for them.”
