Fine for driver who ‘didn’t realise he was uninsured’

A DRIVER who claimed he was driving without realising he wasn’t insured has been fined and disqualified from driving for a month.
Nathan Gallagher (20) of Spout Road, Fivemiletown pleaded guilty to having no insurance at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday.
On July 29th this year police were on mobile patrol at Trasna Way in Lisnaskea when they stopped Gallagher’s Vauxhall Corsa and asked him to produce his licence and insurance documents. He was unable to produce his insurance, and was given time by police to present it to his local police station.
A week later Gallagher got in touch to say he couldn’t find a copy of his insurance policy, and police gave him more time to look for it.
He later got back in touch to say he had contacted his insurance company and they had cancelled his policy. Gallagher did not receive the letter telling him this as it was sent to his previous address.
Defence solicitor Michelle McVeigh said Gallagher, who is still a restricted driver, had been living with his father but the relationship had broken down and he had moved in with his mother in Cookstown.
He had lost his job as a result of the move, and his insurance had been cancelled as he had insufficient funds in his bank account.
District Judge Michael Ranaghan said that, despite his young age, Gallagher had dealt with the situation maturely.
The judge fined him £150 and disqualified him from driving for one month.
