Social media ‘death threat’ to Foster probed

POLICE are currently investigating an alleged ‘sinister’ threat to kill DUP leader Arlene Foster.
The Fermanagh woman was the victim of alleged comments posted on social media, and it is believed that a man made comments in which he said he ‘must try’ shooting Arlene Foster to ‘see if I’d get away with it.’
Ms Foster attended the funeral of William Frazer in Bessbrook on Monday afternoon but the front of her constituency office on East Bridge Street, Enniskillen has been marked out with police cones.
The comments which were posted in recent days were reported to the police who are now investigating.
A DUP spokesman has called for social media companies to tackle the issue of online abuse that those in the public eye endure.
The spokesman said, “Nobody should be subject to online abuse, no matter whether you agree or disgrace with their political stance or views. The language used in this instance was particularly sinister and in the interests of safety it was referred to the Police.
“Unfortunately Arlene and others within the public eye have to deal with online abuse regularly. It should not be a way of life and must be tackled by social media companies and authorities.”
A police spokesman said, “We do not discuss the security of individuals and no inference should be drawn from this.
“However, if we receive information that a person’s life may be at risk we will inform them accordingly.
“We never ignore anything which may put an individual at risk.”
