Priest in last-ditch Brexit appeal

AT exactly 11pm this tonight night, the moment that was supposed to mark the UK’s exit from the EU, people from across the border counties will gather in Kiltyclogher for a candlelit vigil.
The sombre event, which is being held in the Leitrim village as it will potentially be cut off by three border roads, has been organised by Border Communities Against Brexit (BCAB). It comes the night before a day of major protest planned for Saturday.
With similar events taking place along the border in Agahalane, a “significant” protest will take place at Belcoo and Blacklion at 3pm tomorrow, March 30, at 3pm.
Lisbellaw priest, Fr Joe McVeigh, is one of those who will be on the bridge on Saturday afternoon.
“We are asking everyone living along the border, on either side, to make an effort to attend their nearest demonstration and follow us on Facebook,” he said.
“We are calling on all trade unions, representative groups, civic leaders and citizens to join with us in demonstrating our anger at being taken out of the EU and our opposition to any return to a hard border in Ireland.” Fr McVeigh pointed out.
“We will be sending to a very clear message that the people of the border region and, indeed, the people of Ireland will not acquiesce in any construction of new border installations, customs posts or on any restriction of movement in their own country,” he added.
