Woman who crashed into wall ‘took a funny turn’

A WOMAN woman has been fined and given penalty points after crashing into a wall near Lisnaskea
Margaret Duffy (55) of Surfside, Bundoran, appeared at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday charged with driving without due care and attention.
On June 20th 2018 around 9.48am, police were called to a one vehicle collision on the Lisnagole Road, Lisnaskea.
On arrival, Police observed a silver Toyota Corolla collided with a brick wall, as the car was travelling from Maguiresbridge to Lisnaskea. The court heard that the car went across the carriageway and collided with the wall.
The driver was breathalysed but no alcohol was found in her system, and she was taken to hospital following the collision.
The court heard that the defendant said she took ‘a funny turn’ and that there was nothing to distract her on the road but that she had previously taken medication hours before her journey as she was a diabetic.
Defence barrister Michael Fahy told the court that his client had been feeling unwell prior to the collision, and that she had taken medication around 10pm the night before.
Mr Fahy added that the defendant had been driving for over 25 years, was used to driving long distances and that she did not have a record.
He added that this had been a ‘learning curve’ for her, and explained that she sustained a broken hand and other injuries in the accident.
District Judge Michael Ranaghan asked how much damage was caused to the wall and it emerged that the defendant had paid for the damage to the wall.
Judge Ranaghan gave the defendant credit for paying for the damage, and noted that this offence was mid to low range dangerous driving. He issued her with five penalty points and fined Duffy £150 and ordered her to pay £15 defenders levy fee.
