New crematorium plans for Fermanagh

PLANS are currently being put in place to provide a crematorium which will serve three council areas including Fermanagh and Omagh.
The nearest crematorium, in Cavan town, is increasingly used by families here since it opened two years ago.
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is exploring options for the crematorium jointly with Derry City and Strabane and Mid Ulster District Councils.
The crematorium facility would be based adjacent to its cemetery at Greenhill in Omagh. It is believed that while the crematorium would be in Omagh, it would be available for use by the people of Fermanagh.
The Irish News reports that officers from all three councils recently met in Omagh to discuss the plan, and that £10,000 would be provided by each Council.
A spokesman for Fermanagh and Omagh District Council confirmed that discussions are in place, and a business case has been commissioned.
“Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has outline planning provision granted for development of a crematorium facility adjacent to its cemetery at Greenhill in Omagh. Recent work has been completed on a feasibility study and a business assessment for the development of a crematorium facility on this site.
“An Outline Business Case has been commissioned to consider site selection, operational models and will develop an overall procurement and delivery strategy for the project. Further updates on this project will be provided as the project develops.”
