THE legacy of the late Canon Tom Marron looks set to live on for generations to come in his former parish of Tempo.

Tempo Maguires GAA club have just launched a new fundraising initiative to help cover the costs of a state of the art training and recreational facility for the club and for the wider community.

The new club facility will be named after their former Parish Priest, Canon Marron, who passed away last September.

Canon Marron spent two decades as parish priest of Tempo and was widely regarded as the ‘heart and soul’ of the community and it’s where he was laid to rest following his death at the age of 89.

His great love of Gaelic games made him a “beloved friend and active supporter” of Tempo Maguires GAC during his many years there. A month after his passing, the club launched the Canon Thomas Marron Memorial Cup in his honour.

Work on the facility, which will include a floodlight training pitch, community walking track and outdoor exercise equipment, will be commencing soon. Members and supporters of Tempo Maguires are now embarking on a significant drive to raise much needed funding for the ambitious project through the sale of tickets for a monster draw that was launched at the weekend.

The top prize is £10,000 and tickets cost £20 each or three for £40.

A spokesman for the club said Canon Marron was instrumental in developing the new chosen site for this new facility for young people in the club to play Gaelic football, hurling and camogie: “Over the coming weeks and months, ticket sellers from Tempo Maguires will be visiting houses and communities across neighbouring parishes and counties and the club would appeal for people to support this fundraising initiative to allow us to develop this much needed facility for the promotion and development of Gaelic games in our community.”
