Tom Elliott insists he has a good relationship with GAA.

FERMANAGH AND SOUTH TYRONE MP Tom Elliott has wished the Fermanagh GAA team well ahead of their Ulster Championship Quarter Final with Antrim on May 31.

Speaking to the Herald this week Mr Elliott was asked if he wished the county team in their upcomin game. He replied: “Well I would wish them all well, I would have no difficulty in that, I just have no major interest.”

He continued: “I wish all the teams well and obviously if Fermanagh is doing well that’s fine, I have no difficulty with that whatsoever and those people that want to go I would wish them a good day out.”

The issue of Mr Elliott’s comments in last week’s paper regarding his decision not to attend a GAA match in the North was the subject of a lively debate on BBC Talkback. Mr Elliott stood firm on his comments this week:

“The position hasn’t changed, I have no intention of going to a GAA game when they fly the tricolour and play the Irish national anthem in Northern Ireland.”

Mr Elliott also stated that despite refusing to attend a Fermanagh game he has a good relationship with the Association.

“I have a good relationship in general with the GAA. I meet with the Ulster Council, I’m chatting Ryan Feeney (Secretary of Ulster GAA) on a regular basis and I help local clubs with both funding and planning issues here in Fermanagh. I have never had any difficulty doing that, so on a practical level and a personal level I have no difficulty. I have been at GAA grounds in line with that assistance.”
