Super-rich Spirulina: From the sea to your supplement

Our beauty blogger Catherine McCurry takes a look at Spirulina tablets….

IT IS difficult to find sources of foods or supplements which have a range of vitamins and minerals packed into one and we often find our cupboards filled with an array of coloured containers.

However, I have recently come across a naturally organic and highly nutritious micro salt water plant, spirulina, which is high in both vegetable protein, multi vitamins and contains a wide range of minerals.

The powder compressed tablets are green, small in size and is one of the most nutrient-rich and complete food sources in the world and is a unique type of algae that can be found in the world’s oceans and lakes. Since the 1970s, spirulina has been well known and widely used as dietary supplement and is an algae that contains over 100 nutrients.

The green powder has almost four times more vegetable protein than fish or beef, contains multi vitamins including Vitamin B, which is often absent in a vegetarian diet.

It contains Iron, Potassium, Magnesium Sodium, Phosphorus, Calcium among other minerals.

It also has a high volume of Beta-carotene which protects cells – 40 times more than spinach – and can help reduce cholesterol and prevent heart disease.

As well as the powder form, spirulina is available to buy in packs of tablets.

The tablets deliver the same benefits as powder, but digestion generally takes an hour so to get faster results trying chewing or allowing them to dissolve in your mouth.

If there is a point in the day when your energy levels are depleting take one or two tablets and you should feel energy levels increasing an hour or two later.

They’re easy to take and is certainly good for that post-lunch slump we often get during work or at home.

As with all supplements you should speak with your doctor before use if you’re pregnant, nursing or being treated for any medical condition. Should you have an adverse reaction to it, discontinue use and speak to your doctor.

It’s recommended to take six – 10 tablets per day with water, but I started out with just four a day and will gradually build that up over time as my system adjusts to the tablets.

If you do experience any detox effects – like headaches, bowel disturbances and frequent urination, fatigue, weakness, bad breath, intense hunger pangs and cravings – you should decrease the dose until your body has adjusted to the benefits of the food.

While it is highly nutritious, it is not intended as a replacement for a balanced and varied diet.

It is also suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

You can also mix it through your fruit or vegetable juice.

Organic Spirulina powder compressed tablets can be purchased from local health food stores: 200 tablets cost around £20.50.

Some of the health benefits of spirulina include:

– boosts the immune system

– improve digestion

– reduces fatigue

– build endurance

– cleanses the body

– boosts energy levels

– control appetite

– maintains healthy cardiovascular function

– supports the liver and kidneys

– reduce inflammation

– benefits people who suffer from allergies
