RAISE AND GIVE… Karen Wray

A FORMER DEVENISH College head girl is now making her mark in the legal world as president of the University of Ulster, Jordanstown (UUJ) Law Society.

Karen Wray, from Derrygonnelly has been in the role since August 2013 and describes the position as a ‘fantastic opportunity’.

“The society is one of the biggest on the Jordanstown campus and it is the longest running. It is a very student oriented society as it is run by the students for the benefit of the students.”

She continued: “Recently I represented the Law Society at the School of Law’s 21st Anniversary Ball. This was a great experience as I gained the opportunity to mingle with a lot of judges, barristers and lawyers. The Lord Chief Justice (Sir Declan Morgan) was very interested in my plans for the society and in particular starting a Mooting society in the University of Ulster.”

In a first for the university an Intervarsity moot took place last week and Karen led her Jordanstown team to victory over the Magee campus, an achievement recognised by both her lecturers and Eugene McNameee, the head of the School of Law.

In what was a busy number of days for the Fermanagh student she also played a key role in raising over £1,900 for RAG (Raise and Give) week, an annual charity event held at universities across the United Kingdom.

“Our chosen charities this year were Guide Dogs NI, The Simon Community and Ups and Downs.

“My role was that of a volunteer/RAG officer throughout the week. I organised an event run by the law society and this was a charity mens leg waxing in which we had five volunteers to get their legs waxed. The event created a great buzz on campus and on the day we raised £502.

“We did not expect to raise as much at all. Our aim was to beat last years total of £1100. The week was very enjoyable and the event that I enjoyed the most had to be the charity waxing. I may be a bit biased in saying that, but it was the event that raised the most money.”

Despite the hard work Karen has no regrets.

“It is a stressful role as there is a lot to organise, but I do enjoy it. Not only will it look amazing on the CV but it has also been a joy to be a part of such a great society. It really has enhanced my university experience.”
