St Michael’s preparation for their upcoming MacRory Cup quarter final with St Patrick’s Cavan in mid February is now in full swing.

A number of challenge games have been pencilled into their programme over the coming weeks and the first of these was last midweek when they tackled St Patrick’s Dungannon at the Tyrone complex in Garvaghey.

The Enniskilllen side were to lose out after a close encounter, Dungannon poaching a goal late in the hour to squeeze out a slim victory.

The game had been a finely poised one all the way through, the Tyrone college leading by a point at the break on a scoreline of 1-4 to 0-6. First half points for St Michael’s had been supplied by Lee Brennan, Eoin McManus and Daire Gallagher.

On the resumption the contest was to continue on similar lines neither side able to exert any sustained spell of command. Dungannon did knock in a second goal which gave them an edge but St Michael’s who looked sharp enough in attack were to keep themselves well in range another raft of points, Eoin McManus again to the forefront here with other scores coming from Shane Rooney.

It was McManus who has emerged as one of the team’s key forwards who collected what was to be the only St Michael’s goal of the day.

This arrived some ten minutes from time had hauled the Enniskillen college back on terms. From there to the finish it was again a taut encounter but a few minutes from time St Pat’s completed a hat trick of goals to secure a close win.

St Michael’s had been scheduled to play St Colman’s in a challenge tie last weekend but this has now been re arranged for a date this midweeek.

The quarter-final against neighbouring Cavan will be played at St Tiarnach’s Park, Clones on Saturday February 15th.
