LATEST: Man arrested following early morning ‘hit and run’

A MAN has been arrested following the suspected hit and run which claimed the life of a man in his 50s yesterday morning (Sunday, January 5).

The man in his 40s was arrested in Pettigo yesterday.

At this stage, police believe a man was struck by a car that failed to stop on the Tullychurry Road, Leggs, near Belleek, at around 2.50am.

Police are seeking a blue Ford focus with frontal damage, and have appealed for more information.

The road is expected to remain closed for some time.

Local councillor Raymond Farrell admitted his shock and sadness at the death.

” I am saddened to learn of the death of this man in a hit and run accident near Belleek. The beginning of a new year, leads many to plan ahead but sadly the family of this dear man,have seen the family unit broken and are having to cope with sudden loss. My heart goes out to everyone involved in this terrible tragedy.I pray they will know God`s strength as they face the coming days.”
