JP Scholarship Awards

TWO local students have managed to come away with prestigious scholarships that will help financially as the two continue on their university courses.

The two local winners were Orlaith McManus, Brookeborough, and Gavin Hilliard – and the pair were among 125 from across Ireland.

The 2013 All Ireland Scholarships, sponsored by JP McManus were officially recognised by the CEO of Ryanair, Michael O’ Leary, Michael Noonan T.D  and the Minister for Employment and Learning, Northern Ireland, Dr Stephen Farry.

The educational scheme is set to provide financial assistance to many high achieving students who completed their A Level/Leaving Certificate examinations in 2013.

19-year-old Orlaith, who attended Mount Lourdes in Enniskillen, described the scheme as great help to students across the country.

Orlaith is now studying medicine at Queen’s University, and had studied biology, chemistry, physics and economics at A Level.

“I was shocked when I heard about winning it. There are four in my family at university this year so the scholarship is a great help,” Orlaith told the Fermanagh Herald.

“The ceremony itself was a huge success. Myself and two other recipients were selected to meet with JP McManus and Michael O’Leary before the ceremony. It was an honour to meet the man who was sponsoring the scholarship and providing me with the wonderful opportunity. He was very humble and down-to-earth as well. Micheal O’Leary was a character, he was very entertaining and his speech in the ceremony was brilliant.”

Gavin, who attended Portora, is now at Warwick Business School.

“To be one of the two students from Fermanagh to receive the scholarship, it is a great honour and proof that perseverance does have rewards,” he said.
