IRISH Taoiseach Enda Kenny will again attend the annual Remembrance Day service held in Enniskillen.
Last year Mr Kenny attended the service on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Enniskillen bomb and laid at wreath at the Cenotaph and this year he again will be part of the November commemorations.
President of the Royal British Legion, Enniskillen branch Billy Dixon explained that the Taoiseach personally phoned up and asked could he attend the service.
“We’re delighted to have him again after last year,” he commented.
The Lord Lieutenant for Fermanagh Viscount Brookeborough will host the Taoiseach in what will be only the second occasion a Southern Head of State has attended a Remembrance Day outside the South, the first being his visit to Enniskillen last year.
Ahead of the visit and the Remembrance Day service, which is taking place on November 10 Mr Dixon has called on the people of Fermanagh to support the Poppy Appeal. Last year the local group raised a record £17,000 and Billy is hoping for similar success in 2013.
“I think last year in most areas the numbers were down, but in Fermanagh we kept our figures up.”
Poppies will be available in Enniskillen from November 4 during the week leading to the Sunday service. In addition to collectors on the Main Street there will also be opportunities to purchase poppies in Asda, Tesco and Dunnes Stores.
We’re very grateful for these stores letting us collect on their premises and we hope to raise as much as last year through the generosity of the local people.”
As part of the Remembrance day commemorations a service will be held at the Cenotaph in Enniskillen at 11am on Sunday November 10. Here it is expected Mr Kenny will again lay a wreath at the War Memorial.
A two minute silence will also be held as is customary. A parade led by Balllyreagh Silver band and with pipes and drums from Four UDR Association and British Legion members will make its way to St McCartin’s Cathedral for the Church Service, stopping first for a salute at the Enniskillen Court House. After the service the parade will make its way down Halls Lane, Castle Street and the Wellington Road, where a wreath will be laid at the South African War Memorial outside the Castle Museums. The parade will then move on and finish at the Royal British Legion Hall.
