THE shock at the lay-off of some 40 employees of Flynns Foods in Roslea has been eased by news that a number of local firms are looking for staff, with one local firm in the meat trade looking for ten operatives.

Last week’s Fermanagh Herald carried adverts from several firms, all but one of them locally-based, seeking workers.

And, it seems that some of the former employees of Flynns have taken out application forms.

Western Brand Poultry NI Ltd near Lisnaskea is seeking 10 operatives. It has a workforce of 125.

A company spokesman confirmed that ‘quite a few’ applications had gone out to the Roslea area.

“We haven’t gone through the application forms, but, yes, there is a lot from that area, although they’re not back with us yet. But, we usually have been getting a large response these last few years anyhow. We’ve no trouble getting good workers.”

In Roslea itself, Smyth Poultry and Transport Ltd are looking  for HGV drivers.

Ironically, no one from the local area is among the 12 applicants to date.

A company spokesman stated. “We had a job for a yardman a few weeks ago and we were inundated. It shows how lorry drivers are scarcer.”

She confirmed the company had received about a dozen applicants, but none from the Flynns fleet. Most of the firm’s drivers are not locally based, with some located at the company base in Cork.

She explained that the firm was not putting a figure on the number of drivers they wanted, that it was more to have a list of drivers they could call on.

Enable Care Services, which provides home helps, is based in Aughnacloy.

They employ 30 care assistants and are looking for four more within Fermanagh, full and part-time, to cover Lisnaskea, Roslea, Clabby, Tempo and Fivemiletown.

The full-timers work a 25 hour week, and the part-timers 16 hours.

A company spokesman explained that teams of care assistants are established in the various areas, with the work allocated to a team working under a supervisor for that area.

The Cooneen Group, whose head office is in Fvemiletown, are seeking to employ five machinists.

The company, which employs about 100 people, is a major international supplier of children’s character nightwear,  and specialist protective and operational clothing.

A spokesman explained that the candidates they are seeking would need to know how to operate a sewing machine.

The Cooneen job advert explains they will be working from diagrams and specifications and they wll be expected to manufacture the firm’s products to the agreed quality standards whilst ensuring that all delivery dates are met.”
