Apprenticeships can lead to a job

OTHER employers in Fermanagh also see the benefit of work experience. Grafton Recruitment encourage anyone seeking permanent employment to give consideration to gain work experience through employment on temporary contracts.

Apprentices Alastair Persse and Michael Collins, who both work at Donnelly Motor Group Enniskillen.

Una Brennan manages temporary contracts on behalf of the Enniskillen branch and states: “Companies in Fermanagh are continuing to recruit on temporary contracts, sometimes to work on a specific project or to help a company meet a deadline, sometimes to cover a period of leave and sometimes to first of all test the business need for a position.”

Una continues: “There are opportunities in Fermanagh, and working on temporary contracts increases your skills, confidence, experience and employability whilst you search for a permanent position.”

Temporary contracts offer competitive pay rates, and Una assures us that Grafton in Enniskillen work with you to find employment that suits your own skills and needs and serve to benefit you in the future.

“Experience gained from temporary contracts can further opportunities into a permanent position, further entry into working for top Companies in Fermanagh”, so the value of working under a temporary contract should not be under estimated. Donnelly Motor Group, Enniskillen also endorse work experience. Group HR Manager, Robert Fitzpatrick explains they recruit into the motor industry via their ‘motor apprenticeship programme.

“In simple terms, apprenticeships are a mix of on and off the job training where-by an employee is recruited into under- taking a formal training programme (typically 2-3 years) with a company and will train alongside their workforce whilst also studying part time.

Similar to temporary contracts, skills and experience gained whilst undertaking an apprenticeship often lead to permanent employment with the company that has invested the time and money in- to the apprenticeship.

And if not, they certainly increase your employability and marketability in the jobs’ market.

Donnelly’s apprenticeship programme, established in 2008, is an excellent example of best practice in Fermanagh with two of their apprentices, Alistair Persse and Michael Collins recently named in the ‘NI Apprentice of the Year’ competition by the Institute of the Motor Industry. Michael will now go on to represent Donnelly Motor Group at the Institute’s final in London in November 2013, and we wish Michael every success from the Fermanagh Herald. More details on Donnelly’s apprenticeship scheme and Grafton Recruitment will be available when both companies attend the Jobs Fair, South West College on 3rd October 2013.
