SOME of the most talented young musicians from Fermanagh and across the Western Board area gave a wonderful concert on Monday night as part of the Western Youth Senior Orchestra.
The concert, held in St Michael’s College, marked the end of term and also marked the end of a five day residential for 50 members of the youth orchestra.
The residential, which was held in the University of Limerick, ran from June 26 to July 1 with the pupils stopping off in Enniskillen on their way home on Monday night to perform the concert.
The Western Youth Senior Orchestra is the WELB’s top orchestra and has a total of 80 students in its ranks – with members coming from Derry, Limavady, Strabane, Omagh and Fermanagh.
Music tutor Bob Quick explains the orchestra meets once a month, in Strabane, for an entire day and that the orchestra consists of string, percussion, wind and brass.
‘The students (in the orchestra) are in their last three years of secondary school and have to have attained Grade 5 or upwards in their chosen instrument.
Mr Quick said the end of term concert last year was held in Omagh so this year it’s Enniskillen’s turn with St Michael’s College chosen as the suitable venue for the musicians returning from Limerick.
The concert was for parents and friends but was also open to the public.
The concert will be conducted by John Bergin with Alice Bergin the leader of the orchestra.
The programme will include work by Schubert, Borodin, Shostakovich, Strauss and Boubill. There will also be music from a traditional group.
The Western Youth Senior Orchestra is in existence over 40 years, and still going strong attracting the best local young musicians to its ranks.
