Film Focus: Iron Man 3

Robert Downey reprises his role as Tony Stark in Iron Man 3

Robert Downey Jr reprises his role as Tony Stark in Iron Man 3

WITH THE SUN peeping out from behind the clouds this week you could be forgiven for thinking the summer has come early. Wishful thinking, maybe.

A look at the cinema listing would also suggest summer is near as the first, and possibly one of the best ‘summer’ blockbusters has arrived – in the shape of ‘Iron Man 3’.

So far the Iron Man movies, starring the energetic Robert Downey Jr as industrialist Tony Stark (and his alter ego Iron Man), have been major box office successes, and rollicking adventures and early indications suggest ‘Iron Man 3’ will be no different.

Whether you like 2D or 3D you have a choice with the new film, and expect to see Iron Man 3 playing in the local cinema for the next few weeks.

Directed by Shane Black this film sees Tony Stark taking a battering from a mysterious villain The Mandarin (played by the always excellent Ben Kingsley).

The Mandarin attacks everything that’s precious to Stark – his family and his home and almost kills him in the process leaving Tony Stark’s world destroyed.

Stark is down (but not out) and is determined to find out what happened, who is responsible and get some revenge.
Up against all odds, and without the resources he is so used to Tony Stark – the man – must find a way to survive, and protect those closest to him. And find a way to rise up again.

The Iron Man movies, based on the Marvel comic character, are great for special effects, great for adventure and are true ‘popcorn munching’ stuff.

It’s great to see Hollywood is still pumping out such big blockbuster movies which is a great indication of the health of the modern cinema.

Films are still big business, and anyone who loves film will know the only way to really enjoy any movie – but especially a special effects adventure like this is on the big screen.

But it appears the way we watch, and rent movies (away from the cinema) is changing dramatically, and evidence of this is the very sad news that the Xtra-vision chain of DVD rental stores has gone into receivership. It appears that going to the ‘video’ shop to get a movie for Friday night is fast becoming a thing of the past.

With dedicated movie channels, iTunes and other online services not to mention TV providers now giving you the chance to rent movies through various digital boxes a high street shop, which you actually have to leave your house and go to, doesn’t really stand much of a chance.

Lets hope a buyer can be found for Xtra-vision, as I still find something great about going in and looking at the various films before picking one. It’s much the same as going into a good record shop. But they are a dying breed to, aren’t’ they.
