MULTI-USE-GAMES-AREAS or MUGAS are to be rolled out across five areas of  the county, in a move welcomed by local councillors.

The areas suitable for a variety of sports are set to become a new addition to villages around Fermanagh and councillor Robert Irvine was first to praise the move.

“This is welcome news to my community and other communities around the county.” Mr Irvine said young people around the county wanted to kick ball and were very impatient. He did though praise the council for their diligent work in bringing these new facilities about.

Chairman Thomas O’Reilly said that when he would be returning home that in Newtownbutler they children were ‘always playing at night’ taking advantage of the ‘great facilities’ they have on offer and  he too paid tribute to the council for their work.
Sheamus Greene reiterated the favourable comments and said: “I wish to see a MUGAS in every village and hopefully this will come to fruition. I think everyone should have one in this day and age with Xboxes.”

Rosemary Barton was similarly effusive in her praise, thanking the council for their work and welcomed their forthcoming letter of offer for the MUGAS.

Speaking to the Herald previously Chief Executive of Fermanagh District Council Brendan Hegarty confirmed there were a few strategic projects in the pipeline in regards to MUGAS and named one project based at the Bawnacre in Irvinestown.

“That’s an additional 3G sports facility and we are working in partnership with the local school.”

Last week Chief Executive of Fermanagh District Council Brendan Hegarty confirmed that a letter of offer for the MUGA project had been received and funding would be released for MUGAS in five parts of the county in five separate areas.

“We intend to be bringing a report to the policy and resources committee in June and hopefully will award contracts starting in July.

“There were eight projects in total and a positive for us is that four of those projects are based in County Fermanagh. The other two are the Arc Healthy Living centre and the other a new 3G surface for  Ballinamllard Football Club.”

The funding of over £600,000 is coming through the Rural Development programme administered by SWARD and will benefit the areas of Lisbellaw, Derrylin, Belcoo, Garrison and Kesh.
