TWO GIGS and the release of a three-track EP seems like a lot to fit in in two days – but for Fermanagh and Belfast-based band, Yellow Car No Return, this week, they’re doing just that.

A staple in the local music scene for many years now, the three Queen’s University students: guitarist Eoin Parkinson, drummer Paul Gallagher and bassist and vocalist Luke Burns, have written and recorded three songs that they’re releasing this week – and are celebrating with gigs in Belfast, and Fermanagh.

On Thursday, the band headlined The King’s Head in the city, while on Friday night, they’re playing in Level 7 at Blake’s of the Hollow.

Available in a limited run on CD, and online, two songs: ‘257’ and ‘Glory Days’, along with a demo, ‘Boxchin’.

Luke spoke to ‘MusicFocus’ about the release.

“The songs themselves were written around a year and a half ago. I think at the start there was something that wasn’t quite working. But once we got playing them live, things started to fit in quite nicely.”

“They both came out of a period when we were writing songs that were quite ‘heavy’ for us – they’re definitely a bit darker than what we’re used to. But I was always a big fan of them, and we wanted to get them out there.”

The tracks were recorded at Oaks Studio, Enniskillen close to two months ago.

The band also offered fans a preview online, for one hour only at the end of March. However, the first opportunity many local fans will have to get a hold of the tracks is at Blake’s of the Hollow – who themselves have been strong promoters of local music in Fermanagh.

“We got close to 150 listens within the hour that we had it online – we didn’t give people too much time, but we got a good reaction.

“We are doing a special edition release this week. We’ve also got the demo (Boxchin) on it. It’ll be available online – and there’ll be a limited number of discs available to buy.”

And what can patrons expect from their setlist?

“We play mostly our own stuff now. When you’re starting out as a band it’s good to play a few covers to let people know who your influences are and it also helps them get involved when you’re playing songs they know.”

On Friday night, April 12, doors open in Level 7, at Blake’s of the Hollow, at 9pm with support from Rocket Propelled Gorillas, Philthy and more to be confirmed.
