THE walkway up Cuilcagh mountain may not be safe, according to one Fermanagh councillor.

Speaking at the monthly meeting, Basil Johnston explained he had been up Cuilcagh and had been left “baffled” by signs which advised against walking on the mesh covering near the summit.

“The only sensible place to walk is on the mesh”, he suggested. “It is very confusing to the public.”

He explained that, due to the fact the area was overgrown, the safest option was to walk on the mesh.

Robert Gibson, the council’s director of leisure and tourism, told Mr Johnston it wasn’t clear whether or not it was safe to walk on the mesh.

“I’m not sure if it is 100% safe, but I will take it under consideration.”

Speaking this week, Mr Gibson gave an update on the matter.

“The situation at the minute is when you go up a certain distance on the track, there has been a landslip and damage on the mesh line. That part of the path has been closed.”

“He (Mr Johnston) felt on a personal level that due to further growth on the mesh that it was safer to walk on it. He himself had been up and was of the opinion that the grass growing through the mesh meant it was less slippery than it would have been, but that’s not the advice that we are  getting.”

Mr Gibson reported that the Council were currently working with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency to deal with the issue on Cuilcagh.

“We are in discussions with them, and have obtained some money through the Border Uplands project.”
He said the council was working with NI Environment Agency, NIEA to determine an alternative route and a suitable path construction method.
