He came, he saw – and he has almost conquered.

Musician Anthony McBrien last Wednesday night booked his place in the semi-final of TG4’s Glor Tire competition.

But it wasn’t plain sailing.

Anthony found himself in the bottom three, two were to vacate the competition, and were it not for the judges’ wishes, he would not be returning to sing this evening (Wednesday).

“I sang a song that I wrote myself, ‘Mama’s Radio’. There were seven left, and two more had to go home.”

After performing, and when the votes were tallied, Anthony found himself in the bottom two.

“It was probably the most nervous I’ve been on the programme. When your name’s not called out – you get nervous.”

The judges then decided to keep Anthony in the competition.

“I was delighted – for judges who’ve such a strong knowledge of music to pick me was great.”

Now, he has moved on to the semi-final, which takes place tonight, where he will perform, in Irish,  ‘The Isle of Inishfree’, and ‘Open up your Heart’ by Buck Owens.

“This is probably the hardest week of all,” Anthony continued.

“I didn’t think I was going to get this far – I didn’t want to be put out first – but after getting through that everything else has been a bonus.

“I can’t thank people who’ve supported me – a lot of people out there are supporting me, it’s very positive.”

His mentor on the show, Susan McCann, was full of praise for her man ahead of the tonight’s performance.

“I feel that he should get into the final,” she said.

“He’s the best singer on the show in my opinion but these shows don’t work that way – it depends on votes. I hope people will vote for him, he’s a fine singer, a fine song-writer, and a gentleman.”

Anthony will perform in the semi-final of Glor Tire from 10.30pm tonight.
