Barrier at blackspot ‘saves driver from serious injury’

Brookeborough car crash

A DRIVER has escaped without injuries after a one vehicle collision close to the spot on the A4 that claimed two young lives.
On Wednesday night September 12th around 8pm, there was a one vehicle car accident on the A4 Belfast road in Brookeborough.
The silver car ended up on it’s side and the driver, who hit the crash barrier, luckily escaped without any serious injuries.
Within yards of the accident, 29-year-old Kiara McCoy was killed on the road in November 2017, while 21-year-old veterinary student Jamie Nelson was tragically killed in March 2015. Local Councillor Victor Warrington has expressed his concern about the busy road following the recent minor accident.
“In the past, there was two fatalities within yards of where this accident happened. For some reason, this part of the road is very dangerous.
“Whatever happened, the driver lost control of the car and hit the crash barrier. The crash barrier did what it was supposed to do, even though it is looking a lot worse for it now.”
“This is a spot that has been discussed with both the PSNI and the Department for Infrastructure. We had been looking that part of the road safer but unfortunately, it is the main A4 road and it is difficult to get a solution for it. Something needs to be done – there has been an extra lane put in, but it is just a very fast bit of road.”
A PSNI spokesman said, “There was a one vehicle road traffic accident on the Belfast Road in Brookeborough. The driver sustained very minor injuries. A crash barrier was damaged and the car but everything else was okay.”
