Police arrest man after seven hour roof stand-off

POLICE in Enniskillen have arrested a 22-year-old man after an incident last night that saw a section of the town centre cordoned off for several hours.

There was much local speculation yesterday evening after Belmore Street was sectioned off by emergency services, with several agencies including police, ambulance and fire services at the scene.

Police have now confirmed to the Herald the incident involved a young man on a roof for over seven hours. Specially trained police negotiators were called in to deal with the situation. He remains in police custody.

A PSNI spokesman said: “Police have arrested a 22 year old male on suspicion of burglary and criminal damage in the Belmore Street area of Enniskillen at around 3.10am of this morning, Friday, 15 June.He currently remains in custody helping police with their enquiries.

“The arrest follows a report of an assault in the Belmore Street area of Enniskillen at around 6.20pm yesterday evening, Thursday 14th June.

“Police attended along with the NIFS and NIAS and on arrival located a man on the roof of a house in the Belmore Street area of the town. The road was closed due to the concern for safety of the man and the public.

“Specially trained negotiation officers attended to the male and after seven and a half hours police arrested the man at the scene.”
