There has been shock in Irvinestown after it was announced today the busy town’s Ulster Bank is to close. It is understood customers’ accounts are to be moved to Enniskillen, in what has been slammed as another blow to rural services in Fermanagh.
Cllr John Feely said: “This brings all sorts of disruptions to local people and local businesses. Although Ulster Bank have placed an emphasis on online banking this is not always viable, particularly with weak broadband service and for those who aren’t as familiar with computers.
“Ulster Bank leaving Irvinestown adds to a continuing trend of major banks leaving Fermanagh and it will leave the town with just one bank.”
Mr Feely said Sinn Fein had requested a meeting with Ulster Bank to discuss the situation.
UUP Cllr Diana Armstrong said: “When dealing with large organizations whether public or private I often get the impression the policy of reducing rural branches and services comes first and it is not difficult to ensure the viability figures back up the policy, rather than putting effort into making these vital community services profitable.
“Although the bank has indicated they will contact customers individually with details of alternatives such as the post office, I would still encourage customers with any concerns to get in touch with the bank.”
