THE young schoolgirl who fell from a moving bus in Lisnaskea is recovering at home and has thanked the emergency services for their help.

Aiobheann McBrien, a year 13 student of St Kevin’s College was a backseat passenger on a bus when the back window fell out and she was thrown from the moving bus.

Over 600 students were returning from the school’s first Mass at the Holy Cross Church in Lisnaskea last Monday when Aiobheann fell out of the bus and onto a grass verge at the side of the road.

The young girl sustained minor injuries and was taken to South West Acute Hospital, but was released home again last Monday night.

Speaking about the accident, Aiobheann said: “I am recovering well but I still have cuts and bruises which are slowly healing. I am also on strong painkillers for my back. I suffered a cut to my head which required 11 staples and my left ear is badly cut and I had to get 17 stitches in it. I have been with the doctor a few times with it as it is now infected.

“All I can remember regarding the accident is the events before it. I stood up to speak to my friends and went to sit down. The next memory I have is seeing Mr Kelly and Ms Cush at the scene of the accident.”

Last week, the Herald reported that the bus was travelling around a corner from the church at 40 miles per hour on The Knocks Road, which bypasses the town. The brave student who had a lucky escape has thanked those who came to her aid, and for all the support she has received since the accident.

“The school has been very supportive and so have my family and friends. I have had lots of visitors and lots of gifts. To date I have not been contacted by the WELB to enquire about the extent of my injuries but my family is very supportive.

“Coming from a big family there are always visitors at the house and the St Patrick’s Ladies have also been visiting me regularly. I would like to thank the emergency service that attended the accident and also the doctors and nurses in the South West Acute Hospital who helped me.”

An Education Authority spokesman said, “We are aware of an incident involving a pupil from St Kevin’s College, Lisnaskea which occurred on a bus returning from a school trip. We are currently investigating the circumstances of the incident. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”
