Start of the season at Sligo Races

Sligo Races are delighted to announce the start of their season.

SLIGO Races are delighted to announce the start of their racing season. A spokesperson for the Sligo Races explained, “We have received the go ahead from the Turf Club to resume racing on Sunday, July, 16. We are delighted to announce that racing will commence on Sunday, July 16 with our Family Day. We have a terrific line up of events for the kids including front runners racing club, face painting, free ice cream, goodie bags and more.

A seven card national hunt fixture will start at 1.50pm. Prize money is €91,000 with the feature race ‘The Kilcawley Construction Handicap Hurdle of €20,000’. Gates open at 12 noon so why not come early and make a day of it. The Hazelwood Restaurant will be serving lunch and all of the bars are open for business.

Kathryn Foley, racecourse manager explained, “I won’t deny it has been a difficult year but finally we can see the benefit of the works carried out on the track. This year we are investing €300,000 in track development. The majority of the spend is on drainage but we are also putting a Canter down in place. This work will commence after racing this year. Our capital development plans for the racecourse facilities has been put on hold until after racing in 2018. It is regretful that we disappointed some of our local racegoers and members with the cancellation of the early fixtures this year.

The racing programme for the remainder of the year has been altered, with the upcoming five fixtures run under National Hunt rules. “We are expecting some great racing in Sligo and are hugely grateful to Michael Finneran, manager of Roscommon Racecourse for swopping a Flat Meeting for a National Hunt to facilitate the August 9 meet. As usual we have lots of exciting events in place. August 9 is Farmer’s Day at the Races. Our very popular Ladies’ Day will take place on August 10, with a fantastic celeb judge – Katherine Lynch of Dancing with the Stars fame – who no doubt once more will do us all proud.

“August 22 is Diageo/Rugby Day at Sligo Races. This is going to be a very popular meeting and you never know who
might drop in. The final meeting of the year is our Steeplechase Meeting and Student’s Day – this a fantastic, thrilling day when our students from Sligo Institute of Technology, St Angela’s College and Enniskillen Equestrian College all throng into the racecourse and outshine even the horses with their sense of fun, glamour and style. We are now back on track and are looking forward to a terrific season ahead. We welcome all racegoers new and old and hope you will all have a most enjoyable experience at Sligo Races”.
