Kinawley brothers’ name swap to avoid detection

FH PIC 2 - courtroom 2

TWO Kinawley brothers gave each others details when stopped by police because they “panicked” as one was driving while disqualified.
Caolan Strathie (21) of Coragh Road, Kinawley, was sentenced for driving while disqualified, obstructing a police traffic officer, driving without insurance, driving a vehicle with an incorrect registration form, driving  with vehicle windows that allowed insufficient light, and driving a vehicle with a defective exhaust and silencer at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday, having previously pleaded guilty to the charges.
His brother Dean Strathie (20), of the same address, pleaded guilty on Monday to permitting no insurance, aiding and abetting driving while disqualified, and obstructing a road traffic officer.
Shortly before 7pm on May 16, police stopped a Volkswagen Bora being driven by Caolan Strathie on the Hollyhill Link Road in Enniskillen, with Dean Strathie in the front passenger’s seat. The officers observed a number of defectives with the car, including the windows which did not let in enough light and a defective exhaust and silencer system, and Caolan Strathie was issued with a fixed penalty fine.
The next day, however, Caolan Strathie, called to the police station to say he had given the officers false details to the officers the previous day. The court was told he made full admissions to police, and he and his brother had given each other’s details so he, as having been six weeks into a six month driving ban, could avoid detection. His brother later also made full admissions to police.
District Judge Nigel Broderick fined Dean Strathie a total of £400 and disqualified him from driving for three months.
Judge Broderick fined Caolan Strathie a total of £250, disqualified him from driving for a total of three months, and ordered him to undertake a total of 50 hours community service.
