Elliott start title defence with podium place

Josh Elliott came home second at Silverstone in the first round of the Superstock 1000 championship.

Josh Elliott came home second at Silverstone in the first round of the Superstock 1000 championship.

Josh Elliott returned to competitive action last week as he commenced the defence of his British Superstock 1000cc title at Silverstone.

It started in explosive fashion, but not quite in the manner the Ballinamallard man might have hoped when his bike was destroyed in qualifying.

A manic few hours were then expended as the Tyco BMW team built Elliott a totally new bike to compete on.

The Fermanagh man didn’t let the craziness get to him though as he enjoyed a duel with fellow Tyco rider Ian Hutchinson.

The pair finished second and third after swapping positions on a number of occasions on their S1000RR machines.

At the chequered flag Elliott came home just 3.516 seconds behind Taylor Mackenzie, also on BMW machinery as the opening jousting of the championship concluded.

“All things considered it was a fun race,” said Elliott. “I got a decent start from the third row and chipped my way through. Once I’d got up to second I knew Taylor was probably too far up the road to catch him, so I settled for second but Hutchy came back past me, which was a bit of a surprise.

“He was nice and smooth and I enjoyed riding with him and I’m happy enough with second place after the day we had in qualifying. It was a good day all round for the Tyco BMW team and very enjoyable to be part of.”

Elliott now turns his attention to round two and the May Bank Holiday trip to Oulton Park.
