The Fermanagh GAA community has been rocked by the news that Derrygonnelly Youth Board Chairman Damian McGovern lost his life in a workplace accident this morning.

Father of Gavin, Ryan, Ronan and Niamh and husband of Leanne, a sister of senior player Garvin McGinley, his passing is a terrible blow to his family and the wider community in Derrygonnelly where he played a prominent role.

Immersed in the club all his life, he lined out in goals for the Harps during his playing days. As well as being chairman of the Derrygonnelly’s youth wing, Mr McGovern had managed the Harps minors for the past two years and also had a spell managing the junior side.

Pre-deceased by his father Sonny and brother Bernie, McGovern is survived by his mother Irene, brothers Roger and John, who is the Derrygonnelly Harps chairman, and sister Grainne.

Fermanagh County Board have postponed this weekend’s senior county final between Derrygonnelly and Roslea to Sunday 11th October as a mark of respect.

Elsewhere the organisers of the FEARmanagh multisport event which is taking place tomorrow, Saturday, and centred on Derrygonnelly have confirmed it will go ahead as scheduled, preceded however by an acknowledgement of the tragic passing of Damian McGovern.
