‘We’re in bonus territory’ McCusker

Fermanagh v Westmeath
Just 70 minutes away from an All Ireland quarter final slot and you would think that Fermanagh players are beginning to feel the heat.
Not so according to wing back Declan McCusker. The St Joseph’s man dismisses any suggestions that that the pressure might be mounting.
“For most years Fermanagh have at best two, possibly three championship games,” the Ederney defender declared.
“At the moment we are facing into our fifth game, this is bonus country for us and it has been a great experience. Not just for the younger members of the panel, but even for those who have longer experience.
“In some ways you could say we are packing two seasons of championship into one. You have to go back to 2008 when the county reached the Ulster final to get a similar run of games.
“In fact the real pressure is to get onto the match day panel, not just the team itself. The manager has had some big decisions to take.”
McCusker has had time to fully absorb the sheer exhilaration of the Brewster Park drama against Roscommon and confessed that as the game headed into the final minutes, “I felt that we needed another goal but to get six points in such a short spell was serious going.”
It was a stupendous finishing flourish from Fermanagh and one which has hoisted morale sky high, but McCusker resolutely keeps his feet firmly on the ground as the focus on this weekend’s joust with Westmeath intensifies.
And he expects a very tough test from the Midlanders despite the fact they will be coming into the game on the back of a heavy defeat at the hands of Dublin.
Will Westmeath mentally be on the ropes after their 13 point demolition at the hands of the Dubs?
“I would doubt that,” said McCusker. “I would think that Westmeath will be looking on the Leinster final result as something that was going to happen and they won’t be especially downcast by it. It wasn’t a shock to their system.
“In any case they produced a brilliant second half performance against Meath in the semi-final and they can build on that and of course they will be viewing the Fermanagh pairing as a real opportunity for them to advance.”
McCusker fully expects to see a different strategy adopted by Westmeath for Saturday’s clash.
Against Dublin the Lakelanders were ultra defensive, no great surprise there. But for Fermanagh, the Ederney man anticipates a much more up front attitude from them.
“Defensively we are well organised,” said McCusker. “Perhaps better organised than they are though you could argue that Leinster football is less defensively minded than what you have here in Ulster.
“And in the middle of the park Eoin Donnelly and Richard O’Callaghan have been providing us with a solid platform.”
The big disappointment of the championship campaign was the provincial semi-final defeat to Monaghan.
“It would have been interesting to see how we would have finished that game with a full complement of players, before we went down to 14 I felt that we had a late momentum going.”
But Fermanagh have bounced back from that reversal.
“In the dressing room after the Monaghan exit Pete McGrath asked us were we interested in playing championship football come August. The answer he got was a resounding, yes.”
Two wins on the trot have brought McCusker and team mates within touching distance of delivering that target.
