NEWTOWNBUTLER Together recently hosted a cultural evening of Music featuring Martin Donohoe, better known as  ‘The Cavan Man’, Willie Drennan, Mickey McDonnell and Davy Angus in Newtownbutler Community Centre.

The audience of around 60 were treated to a wide assortment of traditional Irish and Ulster-Scots music and other tunes on a variety of instruments from the talented collection of musicians.

This event was part of the Newtownbutler Together’s ‘Peace Impact Programme’ funded by the International Fund for Ireland and showcased how different musical traditions can share and enjoy each other’s music in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Set up in 2010, Newtownbutler Together is a cross-community group that is working to promote respect and understanding of all cultures and traditions within the village. Newtownbutler Together’s A.G.M. was held during the course of the event and saw the election of a strong cross community committee including a few new faces.

The P.I.P. project is running some more events starting with the first of a series of monthly Dance Taster sessions on the November 5 in Newtownbutler Community Centre from 8pm to 9.30pm.

These are free and the styles featured will be line dancing, old time dancing, jiving, Irish set dancing, African dancing and Scottish Country dancing. The first night is line dancing with Julie Rice.

These taster sessions are intended to give people an opportunity to sample different styles from different traditions and share their love of dance and hopefully learn some new dance moves in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Open to beginners and experienced dancers, everyone welcome.

Next up will be a drumming workshop for all 12-16 year olds in the Community Centre at 6pm on the November 14, the workshop is free but places are limited so registration in advance is advised.

To find out more about any of the groups events, please contact project staff Charley McAdam or Rita Killian on 028 6773 8963 or visit www.facebook.com/NewtownbutlerTogether or call in to the office at First Floor, Credit Union Building, 1B High Street, Newtownbutler, BT92 8JD.
