IT WAS to be the perfect setting where a young couple celebrated their wedding day but after the Enniskillen bride-to-be suddenly died, it is now a day where Lisa Meehan’s life will be remembered.

Lisa was just 23-years-old when she died from a collapsed lung after battling Cystic Fibrosis from a young age.

Along with her fiancee Aaron, Lisa had paid a deposit for their wedding reception at the Westville Hotel.

But after she was admitted in to hospital in March earlier this year, Lisa soon learned she would never make it to her wedding day.

After hearing of her death in July, staff at the Westville contacted Lisa’s mother Georgina as they wanted to put her deposit towards a night that would celebrate Lisa’s inspirational life.

In a candid interview with the Fermanagh Herald, Georgina recalled the days and moments leading up to her only daughter’s death.

“The night she died her condition was quite stable, she was deteriorating but all vital signs were stable but then her lung suddenly collapsed,” she explained.

“She was always in control of everything and was aware of everything that was happening.

“That night the hospital staff asked me did I want to inflate her lung but I said couldn’t make that decision as she made these decisions all her life and I didn’t want to take that away from her.

“Then they asked Lisa if they wanted to inflate her lungs and she simply put it her hand up and said, “I’ve had enough”.

“Thankfully I was there to comfort her. I was with her every second and I slept on an air-bed on the hospital floor for 14 weeks.”

Hours earlier, Georgina had attended her brother’s wedding but unfortunately Lisa was too sick to go.

The Meehan family had prepared a hospital bed at their home in Enniskillen so Lisa could spend at least one night in her hometown, but days before the move, she passed away.

The country themed night will feature number of bands and a raffle will also be held on the night.

“I just want to keep awareness up, we want the money to go in to the grants end of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust to help  young children and their families in times of need,” Georgina added.

“Lisa had spoken to me about what she wanted on the day of her wedding, she was going to have roses and everyone would get one and they would donate £2 to the CF Trust. So I have made ribbons as a gesture.

“Lisa won’t see her one-year-old brother, Jake grow up but she started to make a memory box for him, although she didn’t get it finished.

She also has a 21-year-old brother.

“Aaron, her finance, is a bit quiet at the minute but he’s helping out for the night and he helped organise donations.
This would have been their wedding reception, this would have been the place where they were getting married and he’s only 25-years-old.”

The event is taking place next Thursday, November 6, at the Westville Hotel from 8pm.
