First festival brings barges to Belleek

Belleek Barge festival

BELLEEK marina and the village itself welcomed the ‘barges’ on Friday night in a festival like none other seen in the village.

Around 25 barges descended on the waterway for the weekend festival, organised in conjunction with the Heritage Boat Association.

Events included a fun day, arts and crafts, fancy dress parade, as well as entertainment in the village both during the day and at night.

Organisers have been working for the past six months, and one of them, Bride Gormley, was delighted with how the festival went.

“The barges arrived on Friday and they got a great reception – and from then on all the activities were well supported.”

Terri Keown, 18, from the village, was named the inaugural ‘Belle of the Barges’.

Bridie went on: “We’d a lot of events on but the canoeing lessons went down a treat as did the sports day. There were lots of revellers in the bars and around the town at night as well.”

While the festival may prove to be a one-off, Bridie admitted that its success could lead to another.

“We don’t know what the story is yet but it was a success and of course we’d like to see it back.”
